Science Fair Volunteer Opportunity

Remember the fun days of science fairs as a kid? Now you can relive those days with the opportunity below. This message comes from Alicia Jackson, Director of the Student Leadership Center at the UW College of Engineering:

Donna Cutler-Landsman, the gifted and talented resource coordinator for two Middleton-Cross Plains area elementary schools is in the process of planning Science Fairs for these schools to be held the evenings of March 11, 2010 and April 12, 2010. Donna is looking for university students to attend the science fairs either to do presentations, have exhibits, or both.

If you would like to do some outreach to elementary school students and/or exhibit at these science fairs  - the time commitment would be from approximately 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. both nights.

Please email Alicia Jackson, ajackson@engr.wisc.edu, if you are interested and available and she can connect you to Donna.

Madison March for Green Solutions 11/13/09

This information is forwarded by friend of Energy Hub,
Niels Ole Holck, who works with WISPIRG, www.wispirgstudents.org:

The Madison March for Green Solutions will take place Friday, November 13th from Library Mall to the Capitol Building.  Meet at Library Mall at 3:00pm.

We are marching because energy consumption, depletion of natural resources, local pollution, and green house gas emissions all are rising. This is a completely unsustainable path and cannot be continued!

REthink Wisconsin: Recyclers Needed at Camp Randall

Members of REthink Wisconsin storm Camp Randall Stadium after every UW home football game to collect discarded plastic bottles and other recyclables.  They’ve collected over 1,200 lbs. of recyclables at a single game! (see image above)  This is an important service to the UW Athletics community – help divert tons of non-trash from the landfill!

Energy Hub members can help out by volunteering with REthink during and after UW football games – it’s fun, eco-friendly, and easy!  Contact Maggie Galloway mgalloway@wisc.edu to sign up to volunteer, or show up at Gate A just after the game ends and look for the other volunteers wearing blue shirts (the shirts are provided for volunteers).  With 30+ pairs of hands, sweeping the stadium only takes an hour or so.

REthink still needs volunteers for the upcoming football game, Saturday, November 14.
Where: Gate A, Camp Randall Stadium
When: 2pm, or just after the game ends
What to bring: just yourself – collection bags and protective gloves are provided!

Kickoff meeting covered in Badger Herald

Our kickoff meeting was a success, with lots of new students coming to hear what they can do to get involved in our energy future.  To get involved with Energy Hub, email info@uwehub.org with “Join eHub” as the subject line.

The event was also covered in the Badger Herald. Click here for the full story.

Many thanks to our guest speakers, Lauren Azar of the Public Service Commission and Professor Dane Morgan of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at UW-Madison. They gave excellent talks about the enormity and uncertainty of the challenges surrounding energy but also the opportunities we have to make a difference.
